June 3, 1987 Park Board Minutes
Page 5
Anderson said the Park Board's recommendation will go to the
council and then the Citizen's Study Committee and back to the
council.
Williams said he has heard people say it would be nice to have
a community center but what is a community center? Is it a
building, or activities or a rally point?
Johnson said if it is a rally point, a building. is needed. A
good site would be the golf course, or expand Edgewood.
Williams asked what is a rally point? Define and .see if it
could be met in other than one building.
Van Hatten said it could be part of a commercial development.
The City could put in a green space.
Rose said that Edina opened a new facility.
Anderson said that was a joint venture between the city and a
business.
Carlson asked what community centers are. worth looking at?
Anderson said Brooklyn Center, Columbia Heights, Brooklyn Park,
Edina, Eden Prairie are all worth looking at.
Carlson asked if there are any that are not a "building."
Anderson said-there are other communities that are doing what
we are but haven't defined it.
Anderson asked Williams if the Council had a time frame.
Williams said it would depend if there are any costs involved.
Anderson said he was thinking about 3-4 months.
Williams said that sounds about right. The $3 million sounds
about right. That's what the new YMCA will cost.
Johnson said perhaps something could be done with the City and
Ramsey County.
Anderson said it would be difficult. We need a change in
legislation.
Carlson suggested having Anderson pick 3-4 different community
centers to visit and have the Park Board split up and visit
them.
