April b, 1994 New Brighton Pack Board Minutes
Ken Simons from Ramsey County added that trail lights are being
considered; the same as the park system.
Mr. Youngdahl, i 800 Canyon Lane commented that he is in favor. of
the .trail. It is a good plan. The decision to go ahead with this trail
was made a long time ago and it .was a good one. He is a bike rider
and commented that these two crossings aze not nearly as bad as some
he has been on.
Another resident Carol Moen, 899 Brighton Square expressed her
support of the trail. She also is a biker and enjoys trail riding more
than on the. streets.
3
Roger Schilling, 1187 Mississippi, said he was speaking on behalf of
the neighborhood. He did not feel all the safety concerns have been
expressed. He did not feel all who bike, rollerskate, walk will stay on
the trail. There is a lot of traffic on Mississippi from people thinking it
is an entrance to Long Lake Regional Pazk. Would like to see a sign
put up that explains how to get to the pazk entrance. For safety
reasons, need the sign.
Ken Simons stated a .sign could be put up stating "Local Traffic" only.
The sign would be the City's. responsibility.
Mr. Schilling said it needs to be addressed now.
Anderson said between the City and Ramsey County something will be
done.
Ocel said that she agrees that .a sign is needed but believes the traffic
will diminish with the trail. People will ride or walk to the pazk rather
than drive down the street. She too is a proponent of the trails.. Have
biked the Fridley trails. The crossing at Central is more dangerous
than. any of the crossings in New Brighton. Agree that the Long Lake
crossing should have a gate for safety reasons.
MOTION BY OCEL, SECONDED BY ETCHERS, TO APPROVE.
THE RICE CREEK TRAIL AS PROPOSED ALONG THE
RAILROAD TRACKS AND TO PUT UP SIGNS ON MISSISSIPPI
TO INDICATE THERE IS NO VEHICLE ESl'I'RANCE TO LONG
LAKE PARK FROM THIS STREET. MOTION CARRIED.
C. Formation of Family Service Center Committee
Anderson said a notice was in the last issue of "In the Neighborhood"
asking interested people to contact the Pazk and Recreation Department
if they aze interested in being on a committee to develop programs for
the Family Service Center. Anderson is asking that this be a sub-
committee of the Pazk Board. The process would take 3-4 month. At
that time a proposal would go to the City Council regazding fees, etc.
