March 3, 1993 Park Board Minutes C. Purchase of Playground Equipment -Driftwood and Vermont Park Anderson stated there is 530,000 earmarked for play equipment at Driftwood and 525,000 for Vermont. Proposals from 4 major playground suppliers have been solicited. Driftwood play equipment will be installed as soon as possible and Vermont about mid-summer. Anderson said he has 12 people who have volunteered to critique the equipment. Anderson inquired if the Park Board wanted him to bring his recommendation back to the Park Board after he has the recommendation from area residents. Anderson said that with the Gametime proposal, we would be getting a lot of equipment for the money. Helgeson asked why there is different equipment planned for Driftwood than at Vermont. 3 Anderson said Vermont is getting more equipment than Driftwood (the same type of equipment as our other parks) but Driftwood's will be more aesthetically pleasing. Trevorrow asked if Driftwood needs new equipment. Anderson said yes, some is not safe. Some of the equipment will stay (the swings and the hill slide) and additions will be made to it. Anderson also commented that Salem Covenant will be contributing 5700 toward play equipment. Anderson said one sales person had stated that shredded wood could be used in place of cushion flooring for handicapped access. Then all equipment becomes accessible to the handicapped. Helgeson asked if the shredded wood met handicap standards. Anderson said no because there are no set standards yet. Ocel inquired if Anderson would be meeting with residents of Vermont and Driftwood. Anderson said he intends to. The Park Board discussed ways to screen out some of the areas that are not aesthetically pleasing at Vermont. Vines covering the fence was suggested. Other plantings were suggested.
