April 1, 1992 Park Board Minutes 2
Helgeson asked about how this will be financed.
Olson said the money for the programs is already there. What is
needed is the money for the facility itself. New Brighton's share
would be .very little.
Ocel asked if the seniors had to pay for the use of facility when it was
at Edgewood.
Anderson said no.
Benke said cost sharing is becoming more common.
Helgeson asked how the committee felt about the Rice Creek site.
Olson said personally she didn't like it very well. The basement was
dark and it felt rather closed in. The upstairs was more open. There
was only. one entrance on the south side that had an entry level with
no stairs.
Ocel asked if the shopping center by the Northwest Fitness Center has
been considered.
Olson said it had, but had been ruled out.
Benke said if the Senior Center was located at the Rice Creek site it
would bring more people into the area.
Anderson said the cost of the new building and the Rice Creek site
would be about one million dollars difference in a 10 year period.
Anderson said he will be surprised if the Councils don't look at the
cost factor.
Helgeson added that the Rice Creek area would be convenient to other
shopping facilities.
Trevorrow asked if there is concern that people may lose their identity
in this whole process of sharing the Senior Center.
Olson said there is some concern, especially from Fridley but each
community would still have their own clubs.
Trevorrow asked if one of the communities could break away from the
group and choose to pursue one of the sites alone?
Anderson said they could choose that.
Schultz added that the Senior Center could rent out its facilities for
wedding. receptions, etc. which would bring in revenue.
