September 4, 1991 Pazk Boazd Minutes 2
V. New Business
A. Hansen Pazk Tennis Court -Public Meeting
Anderson said he would start from the beginning on the tennis courts. In 1969
the existing tennis courts were built on 60-70% peat. The soil is very
unstable. The advice given back then was to cover the bad soil with fill.
Anderson said he started working with the City in 1974. In 1972 the courts
have already bad. The City sued the developer. In 1976 the City was
awarded about $6,000. Since then, the City had to abandon the fourth court.
A basketball court was made in the 4th court area. A few years ago the fence
was taken down and restretched. The cracks are constantly refilled.
Anderson explained that the azea for the new tennis courts would be
excavated. The asphalt from the old courts would be removed and the good
fill under the old courts would be moved to the excavated area. The free
skating azea would be moved to where the tennis courts are now. The free
skating azea would be bigger than what is shown on the plan.
The tennis court work was deferred to late 1991. The work was originally
planned for the spring of 1991.
Anderson said that an informal survey of Hansen Park tennis players was
taken. Players were asked if they wanted courts at Hansen or if courts at
Highview should be lighted instead. The survey indicated that they wanted the
courts at Hansen. If done, the work would start this fall and finish in the
spring of 1992. The .skating azea will be ready this fall.
Olson asked if the hazd court azea would stay.
Anderson said yes, it gets a lot of use. He also indicated that the exercise
station would also remain in the park but it may be moved.
Johnson inquired about lighting of the tennis courts.
Anderson said he was not planning on lighting the new tennis courts. It could
always be done at a later date but it was not in the budget for 1991.
Anderson said there are 3 willow trees that would be retained in the island of
the free skating azea. The skating area would be larger and the trees would
make a nice addition.
Resident, Don Stevenson, stated that the new location of the tennis courts has
a bad orientation for the sun.
