There are no streets that
surround the park directly, which prevents children from playing in
the street. The park is lower than the surrounding area which keeps
balls from rolling into the parking lot. The sand in the equipment
area aids in preventing injuries that may occur from falls.
From the analysis and observation we believe that the
intended purpose of the play area was met. Meadowood Park
promotes psychosocial development because it is located in the
center of the local community. Moving equipment such as swings
and the merry-go-round aid in the development of perception. The
games this playground elicits, such as tag, softball, and king of the
suspension bridge promote cognitive abilities. The various sizes and
gradations of equipment enable children of all ages to utilize the
playground, and this improves motor skills.
The following modifications of the park may be useful. The
rungs on the miniature jungle-gym need to be closer and thinner in
order to elicit play in younger children. Increasing the complexity
with moving parts would perhaps maintain play behavior. Padded
handrails on the teeter-totter would decrease the chance of injuries.
The upper and lower chains that make up the chain suspension
bridge are the same distance apart at both ends. A gradation of the
top chain from four feet to two and a half feet would enable small
children to use this apparatus. The rungs on the overhead ladder
and- the vertical ladders should have knurls to prevent slipping.
10
